B-Minus Happy Hour Spot: Park Avenue Tavern

So here is a new segment we are going to roll out.  We are going to list some great bars in the cities we are familiar with (Chicago, NY, Boston) and will write a brief review on why they are great.  More of a “bar you should try” than a “great awesome dirt cheap happy hour spot.”

The first spot is:

Park Avenue Tavern
99 Park Ave
(between 39th St & 40th St)
New York, NY 10016

“Park Avenue Tavern is the quintessential American bar and restaurant.  Steps away from Grand Central Station, Park Avenue Tavern centers around a combination of classic New York City elegance and over the top hospitality.  Busy street traffic and the centrally located address offer opportunities for a clientele that demand and expect more, and Park Avenue Tavern most certainly delivers.”

If you are looking for a great place to have a mature brew or two, this is your go to place.  This is far from your college frat house but not as far as the swanky clubs in the meat-packing district.  The beers are standard for the craft-cost and location priced.  You should be going here to impress that girl you just met or go out with some corporate hotshots celebrating another week in the books.  The food is upscale for a pub, the portions could be a little bigger for the price.  It’s no longer the best kept secret on the east side, definitely try it out.

B-Minus suggestion: First time you go, make it a no traditional crowd time.  If you want to soak it in and have the chance to look around, don’t go on a Thursday/Friday happy hour….you’re gonna have a bad time.
